When Faith Wavers - Matthew 11:1-19

What happens when the gap between what we hoped for and what we actually received becomes a painful place to live? In Matthew 11, we encounter one of the most honest and human moments in all of Scripture. John the Baptist, a man filled with the Holy Spirit and called the greatest born of women, sits alone in a dark prison cell wrestling with doubt. He had seen the heavens open. He had heard the voice of God. And yet nothing looked the way he had expected. This message invites us into that tension and reminds us that doubt is not the opposite of faith. It is often the doorway to a deeper one. We discover that when John sent his disciples to ask Jesus the hard question, Jesus did not criticize or reject him. Instead, He pointed back to the Word and to His works, anchoring John in truth rather than in feelings. If the greatest prophet who ever lived could sit in the dark and wonder, then we can be honest about our own moments of uncertainty. The question is not whether we will face doubt. The question is whether we will bring it to Jesus rather than turn away from Him.
